Hydrogen

Another climate solution being promoted by the fossil fuel industry and many government leaders is Hydrogen.

Mark Jacobson – Stanford: Most hydrogen today, 96% in fact, is produced from fossil gas. That’s called grey hydrogen, and blue hydrogen is when you take that fossil gas to produce hydrogen but you add carbon capture.

Jim Walsh – Food and Water Watch: The oil and gas industry wants to blend hydrogen into our existing gas infrastructure. The industry says that when you burn hydrogen there’s no greenhouse gases released in the atmosphere. And that is true. However, when you create hydrogen it creates significant greenhouse gases that are worse than coal.

Basav Sen – Institute for Policy Studies: Hydrogen is to a large extent a solution in search of a problem. Most cases you don’t really need hydrogen as an energy source. You can think of some niche applications, like maybe aviation, maybe shipping. But for most stationary applications, why would you use hydrogen. You can point at your nose directly or you can wrap your arm all the way around your head to point at your nose. You’re taking electricity from renewable energy, turning it into hydrogen and then turning it back into electricity.
